BEHIND THE DECISION
Last Wednesday 28 February the decision was made at the FIA World Motorsport Council to remove the hybrid and return to 100% combustion engines. After a few days we have some important details:
Hyundai and M-Sport wanted to remove the hybrid immediately, Toyota was quite neutral. At the time of the vote all 3 agreed to remove it starting from 2025.
Compact Dynamics, the sole supplier of the hybrid component, had renewed its contract with the WRC in September 2023. The contract had been extended until 2026 but the parties are now working to reach a consensual resolution.
The general focus for the WRC will be to focus on sustainable fuels (e-fuel) which the WRC has already been using since 2022.
There is a lot of confusion in the system. In the next 2 years we will see different cars from the current ones, we will have a new tire supplier, we do not have a long-term regulation and the current one has been stopped after 3 out of 5 years (rightly but it is never an optimal thing).
