Ever since Man Utd sacked Mourinho nobody has been safe, but yet I still didn’t think we’d see a high profile WRC sacking by 2nd Jan.

News today that Hyundai Motorsport has split with it’s WRC Team Principle Michel Nandan will come as a shock to many. Michel not only ran the team, he set it up in 2013 and had spent a long time persuading Hyundai of the value of WRC before that.

What it does show to me is that Hyundai are committed to succeeding in WRC. Whether or not Nandan is the reason, or even a part of it, Hyundai have failed to succeed so far. The i20 may nave won 10 events but the team has been runner up in the manufacturers championship for the last three years. Hyundai certainly looks the biggest team when you see their HQ in the service park, which during 2018 grew to three storeys high, so I’d imagine they are amongst the best funded. I’m sure losing to the might of VW could be justified, but losing to Seb in a ‘private’ M-Sport team, and to Toyota in only its second year must have hurt.

Michel came to Hyundai from FFSA (French Motorsport Federation) where he was their Technical Director but I know him best from 2002/3 where he was WRC Technical Director at Peugeot when Richard and I were there. I always got on fine with Michel but did get the impression that Drivers in general were maybe a necessary evil to him and sometimes got in the way of the technical solutions. I’m guessing a bit now but having an engineer as Team Principle maybe doesn’t prioritise the areas of the team where the biggest gains can come from – the management and motivation of the drivers. I would say that as it’s the area of performance that interests me most, but with the WRC regulations remaining pretty tight engineering upgrades are not going to bring big performance gains. However a content, well prepared and confident driver can perform miracles…

I don’t know Andrea Adamo at all so lets see what other changes he now makes. I did also hear that my friend, and race engineer when we were at Peugeot, Christian Deltombe is bound for Alzenau.
"We are three drivers to have the same feelings, the same comments, told us the vice-world champion 2018. If now Sebastien Loeb arrives more and abounds in this direction, we will be four. If we can not convince our technicians to change things, then they have to ask questions. "
