A picture that speaks a thousand words.
I wanted to post some words to express my gratitude for an incredible opportunity to join the FIA ERC - European Rally Championship with Team MRF Tyres Europe - although short, we learned a huge amount this last week and it would not have been possible without the support of our small but extremely passionate team and fantastic partners - Thank you!
Although it’s not the result we hoped for, we showed some real promise; throughout testing we felt very competitive, comfortable and focussed and this carried through into our free practise runs and qualifying.
Certainly a big confidence booster taking P5 in qualifying, running further back in the order and topping some big names, whilst sacrificing our tyre choice to ensure we had what we needed for the rally ahead and learning the new tyres with every kilometre.
However, we all know it’s about finishing these rallies and gaining valuable experience for the future / scoring points for the championship - this is what hurts the most. I didn’t feel like we were driving outside of our comfort zone, just focussing on being clean and getting a rhythm through the twisty Spanish roads. Stage by stage, corner by corner that was the objective!
Unfortunately, after a reasonable high speed section, we lost the rear on a damp breaking zone and I was unable to recover the car before the apex. Very lucky the barrier was there to keep us from going beyond the road. In a split second, an incredible opportunity for us, with a hugely positive start - stopped instantly in the armco barrier.
It was pretty overwhelming in the moment! Huge effort, dedication and grit goes into what we’re able to do as the JWR team, running on purely partnership funding and the hours of family and team to make the wheels turn.
Just when you get a chance to shine and show you’re capabilities on a high level, it’s stopped in a heartbeat and I couldn’t help but feel incredibly disappointed for myself, but for those who made this possible for me! MRF Motorsport Tyres
This being said, it only motivates me to come back stronger, to be better prepared, to learn, adapt and overcome next time. I drive with commitment and sometimes you have to take the rough with the smooth - it’s part of the process.
Our objective was to restart today, we had most of the cosmetic parts and after assessment the car was not too badly damaged - within three hours the team were almost ready to say, it’s ready to restart. However, we could not get a spare damper, with other teams running the latest Step2 damper kits and with no possibility to run a mixture, we had to retire the car.
You will see JW & RW back in the ERC soon, we’ve shown we’re capable of being competitive and I know the full performance will come - although recent setbacks at least at ERC level have been frustrating, I won’t take a step back, the motivation is burning bright.
Now, the second part of our 2 week action packed motorsport challenge is the second round of the British Rally Championship, the Carlisle Stages Rally - which is this Saturday the 12th. In the meantime, the car is heading back to HQ in Wales for a full changeover to gravel spec and I’ll be focussing on the preparation for the stages and what we can do to maximise our car potential in the kielder forests. It’ll be a big challenge, but we’re up for it.
Finally, we’ve received huge support over the past couple of weeks and I’d like to personally thank everyone who’s called, messaged, commented and shared - it’s a huge boost for us knowing we have the support of so many incredible people - thank you, Diolch or galon.
